Beach Cottage Style: A Great Day at the Beach

Is the beach your happy place, like mine? I felt the urge to start a new beach series.

This painting having intense color, texture, and simplicity, that was the original intention of this painting. I started by putting down a layer of color with texture. Then after that dries, I add other colors on top with a palette knife (the fun part) and take away some of the paint here and there with a rag to see what surprises of color may pop up (another fun part). I hope you enjoy this painting and new series coming up. Let me know if you are interested in this series, if it "feeds" your soul.

Here it is:

Could you just see this in a beach house somewhere? Or perhaps, in your bedroom to bring that memory of solitude?
Thank you,

Seafood Foodies:The Claw

Hello,
I hope you enjoyed "Cherokee Girls" and "Moccasins" paintings from the last two posts. I decided to go in a different direction, something for fun. And look where I ended up. Painting a colorful crab claw on black background

There's something so simple and freeing using the black background. It's as if it speaks for itself. And what about that pose of the claw? Demanding a little respect wouldn't you say? Yes, any pincher like that will definitely demand one's respect.

Anyway, I like it's stately pose as if it's was showing off it's vibrant shell of colors.

So here's "The Claw":

Hope you enjoyed "The Claw", there's no telling what I'll paint next. Come back and see what's next.
What do you think? Like the black background? Like to see more of this?
Thanks for visiting, Allison.

Art Collectors, Native American Art: Moccasins

Hello again from the mountain city of Asheville, NC.
Well, I see you are "staying tuned" as I asked, thank you. And since you are still with me, here's a new photo of "Moccasins" inspired by the reviews of viewers. As I mentioned, I believe for some reason, I'm not sure why, the "Cherokee Girls" painting seemed to strike a chord with many. So, don't fix what ain't broke, right? But actually, I paint what moves me, or what's the point, right? So here's another small painting even though, larger than the "Cherokee Girls" painting under the Native American theme.

"Moccasins" is near and dear to my heart. My Dad bought us girls (my siblings and older sisters) moccasins to wear around the house. We thought we were pretty cool. They weren't heavily beaded as the ones in my painting, but they came with fringe and anything with fringe is a cool thing for a young girl! Even looking at this painting now, I'm thinking I'd love to have a pair. How about you? Did you ever own moccasins?

Native American Art: Cherokee Girls

Hello!
Thought it might be a good time to brush up on my technical skills concerning my painting. So, I decided to paint this small postcard size painting, "Cherokee Girls". This one is near and dear to my heart, since a small part of my own family heritage on my Dad's side is Cherokee Indian.

I just love the bright colors these girls are wearing while dancing their traditional Cherokee dances. This little painting sold right away and seemed to strike a chord with many viewers.  The buyer was so kind to leave a comment how she was so glad she purchased the painting and how it was even more amazing in person. My photography skills need to improve, so I'm not surprised the buyer thought it looked better in person. But sure was a nice compliment and I'm happy she's pleased with her painting.

Since this particular painting moved many, I decided to paint another American Indian themed painting. So stay tuned for the next post where I show off the next one in this series.

Here's "Cherokee Girls".

A Sunset Walk on the Beach

While I'm working on a very large skyscape painting like "A Break in the Clouds", I thought I'd post a small abstract painting for you. This painting was made with my palette knives and I love the calming feel to this little gallery wrapped painting. It reminds me of that time of the day on the beach when the crowds are gone and it's just you or almost just you out there. One of those times, when you breathe in that sea air and are just loving the sounds of the ocean. And how you just wish you could bottle that moment, but it will return.

This painting has those calming pastel shades or some might say has that beachy look to it. And plenty of texture, if fact this one is full of rough texture, which reminds me of the textures of the beach. Well, enough said, hope you enjoy it and brings pleasant memories of your vacations or retreats at the beach.

Art Collectors: The Moment That Causes One to Pause

Have you ever had that moment when you looked up at the sky after a storm and saw an unexpected break in the clouds that caused you to pause, to stand in awe? This painting represents that moment with the leftover remnants of a storm's dark clouds, while the light of the sunset is beginning to peak through.

Now about the actual making of this painting, I decided to used a warm and cool palette for contrast. I love to blend colors and here I did quite a bit of blending to create soft look against the striking sky. There is something very soothing about blending paint or dry brushing, it's definitely therapeutic. You might want to try it sometime. This painting is a very wide canvas (40") with intense colors of blues, reds, pink, oranges, olive green, and tan. It starts with soft warm colors and and you do down the painting you see the cool palette colors that lend that look of dark skies from a previous storm.

Perhaps this painting would look lovely over a fireplace mantle, or in a dining room, or even an office? I have to admit this is one of my favorites I have done so far, due to it's dramatic value. Let me know if you are drawn to this painting. I appreciate the feedback!

Renewal

Recently I have been changing things up a bit with my color palette. "Renewal" is from this new palette. I like how it turned out, but it's a little different from my usual work and two comments I've received so far were that it was "pretty". I started to say back to them, "Didn't you know pretty is back in?" But I didn't. I know what they mean. Perhaps, not the best of compliments, but I wasn't looking for any. I know it felt good to make that painting and the experience reflected what was happening on the inside of me. I had taken a break from painting and was bored with my usual color palette and also so comfortable with it. So this was the feminine side wanting to come out and be renewed. This painting feels fresh and energizing to me, with a strong burst of creative energy radiating out from the center.

Surfboard I

Hello again,
While working on my latest water series, one eventually has to come around to surfboards. Don't you just love the feelings that come up when you think about surfboards? That era of the old woodies covered up in cool, brightly colored surfboards has become an American Icon. The music, well oiled tanned surfers in swimming trunks and flip-flops, the smell of the ocean, beach cottages, all images when I think of the beloved surfboard. Here's my version of that worn, well-used, banged up surfboard hanging on the wall, waiting for it's time to be brought out and waxed to perfection for another summer season.

This abstract painting was created by layering process and removing paint to reveal hidden colors. This helps to achieve that worn, distressed look for all the years that have passed by, yet the memories still linger.

Oh, I've included a wonderful and inspirational video about surfing and photography.

Afternoon Sun on the Marsh

Hello All!
Hopefully you read my previous post and you saw the new color palette that I've created for my new water series. Here's another abstract landscape that was inspired inspired by my times at the coast while enjoying the simplicity of the marsh. This painting was painted by using my palette knife to create thick layers of paint. There is a slight subtle glow to this painting from gold paint.
Hope you enjoy the simplicity of this painting.
