A Break In The Clouds

I've decided to go back to painting with my brush and give the palette knife and break. Also, I've been working with a warm/cool color palette. I think I like the contrast.

I've always been a lover of landscapes, but never felt I was successful painting them, since I didn't know where to begin. I was the neurotic one in art class when it came time to paint a landscape, thinking I had to paint each individual leaf on a shrub or tree, and what was I going to do? Fortunately, my art teacher quickly ran to my blankness and show me how to just suggest things, rather than spend a lifetime painting a million leaves. Who knew one could fool the eye so easily with the right technique. But, it never seemed to truly ease my anxiety. I realized I don't have the patience, so I let the patient detail painters of the world tackle those paintings for you.

However, I do still love a beautiful sunset or unusual sky. So that's what I'm offering to you in this abstract skyscape. And that's about as close as I can get to a nice landscape painting.

I hope you enjoy this one, I have to admit it's one of my favorites. I found myself strangely enjoying the olive greens in the painting. I say it's strange, since I don't like olive green. But there's something so warm and calming about it here, do you think? It's the sky that before a severe storm or even after, that intrigues you and makes time stand still for just a moment as you think something unusual is about to happen or just did.

As you look at this painting, notice the openings in the sky. The opening from the clouds that reveal a dark blue sky to the opening of the sun rays and sunset colors coming through, to the opening near the middle with a small amount of land and trees. I could have gone more representational with this painting, but I like it's abstract character. This way, it allows you the opportunity to just experience the mood this painting gives.

I think this long wide painting would look lovely over a mantel or in a dining room. I've just listed this on for sale. Click the BUY button if you'd like to purchase it for yourself. Let me know what you think, I love feedback.

Allison,
Love your new painting! Great 'feel' going on in the central area of the piece with the emanating light area. I also enjoy the breaks in the clouds which lend hope to the mystery of the moment. I look forward to seeing more paintings done with your brush. Keep on flourishing in your expressions of color!
